We’ve all heard that wearing sunscreen is a must-have step within our daily skincare regimen, but have you ever really thought about what ingredients protect your skin from the sun the most? Let’s talk about zinc oxide- an all-natural mineral ingredient that sits on top of your skin and offers the best possible protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Here are a few reasons why you should add a sunscreen containing zinc oxide to your daily routine:
It protects against UVA and UVB rays.
There are two basic yet dangerous types of ultraviolet rays that reach the earth’s surface- UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin leading to premature aging and wrinkles, whereas UVB rays are what cause a sunburn. Oddly enough, not all sunscreens hold ingredients that protect against UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide however is a broad-spectrum ingredient, so it holds one of the broadest UVA and UVB coverages currently available in the U.S.
It’s great for all skin types.
Zinc oxide is used to protect your skin from the sun, so it very rarely causes any irritation. Many chemical sunscreen ingredients can cause a hormone disturbance, but zinc oxide can be used on any skin type, even the most sensitive. Individuals suffering from rosacea, acne, skin discoloration, and even melasma can benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of zinc oxide.
It works immediately.
Unlike chemical sunscreens that can take up to 15-30 minutes to set in before you are exposed to the sun, zinc oxide begins working as soon as it is applied. It acts as a physical blocker of the sun, so just apply and you are good to go!
