This is a critical step that can easily be overlooked. Before you start googling plastic surgeons closest to you, take a step back and make sure that your doctor is board-certified with The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). ASPS is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. It’s vital to be a smart consumer when considering plastic or cosmetic procedures. It doesn’t matter if you’re pursuing cosmetic surgery or more invasive reconstructive surgery, you should only choose a doctor with more than six years of training and experience. More importantly, search for a doctor that has a least three years of training in
plastic surgery in orange county ca.
After you have found a surgeon, make sure that the office is an accredited facility. Some people undergo procedures in a day surgery center, others have their procedures at a hospital. No matter where you go, it’s important that the facility is accredited. What does this mean?
An accredited facility is one that must meet strict national standards for equipment, operating room safety, personnel and surgeon credentials. Outpatient centers, also known as same-day surgery centers, are extremely popular thanks to their safety record. Accredited outpatient centers have a low rate of serious complications (less than half of 1 percent). Additionally, these facilities tend to cost less.
On the other hand, some patients may be required to recuperate at an overnight post-surgical treatment facility. In that case, the patient should also ensure that the facility is accredited and licensed. Requirements that should be met include:
Around-the-clock care by at least two or more staff members at a time
At least one staff member should be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support
An emergency plan should be identified in case any complications arise.
Your surgeon will need a full medical history before any procedure is performed. Most procedures will require anesthesia or sedation, so it is incredibly important to disclose a full, accurate medical history. You may also be required to undergo diagnostic tests. Your health history should include any illness, prior surgery of any kind, and complications from prior surgery. Be sure to disclose all types of allergies and if you’ve ever had a bad reaction to previous anesthesia. It is also critical to include all current medications, vitamins, supplements, and any use or oral contraceptives. Be honest when your surgeon asks about alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. You may be required to quit smoking prior to your procedure. It is not uncommon to cease taking certain medications that increase your risk of bleeding.
To ensure optimal results and reduce the risk of complications, it is important to follow pre and post-operative instructions. On the day of surgery, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything within a defined time period prior to surgery. Follow all postoperative instructions carefully, including cleansing and at-home treatment regimens, and avoid sun exposure. Your cooperation will influence the outcome of your rhinoplasty surgery.
Choosing to undergo cosmetic or plastic surgery is a personal decision. It will be your responsibility to decide if the benefits will allow you to achieve your goals and if the risks of potential complications are acceptable. Each procedure is different; your nurse or surgeon will explain risks associated with any procedure. Expect to sign a consent form to ensure that you fully understand the operation along with any risks and potential complications.
